Organic Charge Pools (OCP) project aims at the development of molecular prototypes whose function is based on single-step multi-electron transfers. Project integrates molecular design, synthesis, electrochemistry and theoretical modeling to achieve control of electron flow that mimics the “charge pool” function seen in redox chemical catalysts. Implementation of three types of electrochemical paradigms will lead to a design of super-electrophores with enhanced electronloading capability. By using electrochemistry and quantum chemical approach we aim to provide mechanistic evidence for synergy effects in molecules of coupled pyridiniums, where cooperative multi-electron transfers are envisaged. Their unique electrochemical behavior will be used to develop electrochemically reversible electron accumulation systems which can be applied e.g. as advanced n-type charge carriers (anolytes) in redox flow batteries.
