3D printing in the electrochemical research: From fundamental studies to practical devices

3D printing has become an omnipresent manufacturing tool in diverse fields including automotive industry or medicine, enabling rapid prototyping of customized designs with greatly reduced expenses. The development of printable conductive materials revolutionized the field of electrochemistry, with novel electrodes being studied from the viewpoint of charge transfer kinetics, analytical performance and durability. Approaches based on multi-material 3D printing have enabled the manufacture of integrated electrochemical devices for sensing, synthetic or catalytic applications.

In this talk, I will review our recent efforts in the development of 3D printed electrochemical devices. Our achievements include manufacturing electrodes with nearly ideal charge transfer characteristics used in reaction mechanistic studies and electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide. Developed devices include sensors of drugs, antibiotics, metabolites and pathogens and platforms for determining (di)electric properties of materials. Additionally, microfluidic spectroelectrochemical platform for sensing in-situ generated species will be presented.
