56th Heyrovský Discussion: International meeting of the scientific community dedicated to two-dimensional materials
From June 8–12, 2025, the 56th Heyrovský Discussions, a prestigious scientific conference, took place at the Renaissance castle in Třešť, this time focused on the latest findings in the field of two-dimensional materials. This significant meeting of experts from around the world was organized by the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences under the leadership of a team consisting of Martin Kalbáč, Otakar Frank, Matěj Velický, and Jana Kalbáčová Vejpravová.
The Heyrovský Discussions have a tradition spanning more than half a century. Their foundations were laid in 1967 by Professor Antonín Vlček, then director of the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry, who maintained them for 24 years. Subsequently, the organization of these meetings has been alternately taken up by senior scientists of the institute under the auspices of the institution's director.
A unique forum for scientific collaboration
The Heyrovský Discussions aim to create a collaborative and welcoming atmosphere that brings together recognized experts, early-career researchers, and students. This unique forum allows participants to share their latest findings and discoveries in a relaxed and friendly environment, thereby fostering meaningful scientific dialogue across generations and disciplines.
Focus on two-dimensional materials
This year's 56th edition of the conference was dedicated to two-dimensional materials, which are among the most promising areas of contemporary materials science. The program included a wide spectrum of topics from theoretical studies to advanced experimental approaches. The lectures focused, for example, on electrochemistry, optoelectronics, spectroscopy, photonics, plasmonics, mechanical and magnetic properties, and structural and defect analysis of these materials.
Continuation of scientific tradition
The Heyrovský Discussions thus confirmed their position in 2025 as an important platform for presenting cutting-edge research and establishing new scientific collaborations. The combination of historic setting, informal atmosphere, and high professional standards ranks this conference among the most prestigious scientific events in the field of physical chemistry and materials science in the Czech Republic.
