Are you fascinated by the potential of emerging 2D materials and their diverse applications across various fields? Join us in exploring the extraordinary features of these materials and unlocking their full potential!

At our lab, we focus on the tuning of the properties of 2D materials to optimize their performance for specific applications. One of the key methods we employ is covalent or non-covalent chemical functionalization, which offers a vast array of possibilities for modifying material properties and introducing new functionalities such as tunability by light through the introduction of molecular switches.

Among other related materials, we are investigating the functionalization of graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). We have already demonstrated attachment of molecules through various protocols such as radical C-C bond formation, nucleophilic and electrophilic exchange on modified graphene and TMDCs. Each of these methods offers different processing advantages and compatibility with chemical groups.

As an intern with us, you will have the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in the field of 2D materials. Whether you're a Bachelor's or Master's student eager to gain hands-on experience or a PhD candidate looking to further explore this exciting area of study, we welcome motivated individuals to join our team and embark on a journey of discovery.

During the internship, you can get involved in a vast variety of different tasks or place emphasis on either one, depending on your skills and interests:
•    Preparation and characterization of 2D materials
•    Multistep organic synthesis of reagents used in their modification / functionalization including molecular switches
•    Performance and development of procedures of said modifications to materials
•    Design and production of functional devices, particularly light sensors

Our lab is excellently equipped for handling all systems from small molecules over 2D materials and their surfaces to electronic devices:
•    Analytic and preparative liquid chromatography / mass spectrometry; nuclear magnetic resonance
•    Confocal vibrational spectroscopy (Raman and IR), photoluminescence spectroscopy
•    Surface-sensitive techniques like atomic force microscopy
•    Measurement of electrical characteristics in AC and DC

Whether you're already passionate about materials science or you just want to take glimpse at what's possible with 2D materials, we encourage you to apply for our internship program by sending an e-mail to doc. Kalbáč (martin.kalbacatjh-inst.cas.cz) or Dr. Koeppe (benjamin.koeppeatjh-inst.cas.cz).
