LILA: A Next-Generation Hybrid Analyzer for Planetary Missions
The LILA (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy & Laser Ablation Mass Spectrometry) aims to develop a next-generation, in-situ planetary analyzer that integrates LIBS and LAMS into a compact, high-performance instrument. By combining optical emission spectroscopy (OES) with high-resolution mass spectrometry based on Orbitrap technology, LILA enables real-time elemental, isotopic, and molecular analysis onboard planetary rovers and landers. The project focuses on validating LILA’s capabilities for scientific use, including detection limits, resolution, and overall performance under planetary conditions. Key scientific applications include the prospection of helium-3 (He-3) and iridium (Ir) resources, detection of water and organic compounds on Mars, and trace element and isotope analysis. In addition, we concentrate on optimizing the system’s design and evaluating its deployment constraints for landers and rovers.
